If you are an adult who is dealing with tooth loss in Gaithersburg, MD, our family dentists Dr. Adam Schneider and Dr. Katie Staub understand just how important it is to get your full smile back. Of course, if you are looking for a restoration that most closely resembles a real tooth then you can’t get closer than a dental implant. Do you have questions about dental implants? We have answers!
What are dental implants?
An implant is a small tapered titanium post that is placed into the jawbone to replace the roots of your missing tooth. In order to place the implant, our Gaithersburg, MD, dentists will first need to open up the gums and drill a small hole into the jawbone where the implant will then be placed. The metal implant is the foundation for the restoration, so it will remain permanently within the jawbone. It’s the false tooth or crown that people will see when you smile.
How many teeth can dental implants replace?
The great news is that no matter whether you need to replace one, several or all of your teeth, dental implants can help replace your missing teeth. A single missing tooth will only require one dental implant; however, multiple implants can also be placed along the top or bottom jaw to support a set of false teeth.
Will implant placement surgery hurt?
Dental implant surgery is a fast, minimally invasive procedure that can take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour depending on how many implants are being placed. This procedure is performed right here in our office under the effects of local anesthesia and sedation so that you don’t feel any discomfort and are comfortable throughout the procedure. It is normal to experience some pain after the anesthesia wears off. We may prescribe painkillers to help ease any post-surgical pain.
How quickly will everything heal after surgery?
This will depend on several factors including your current health status and how many implants are placed. Sometimes it takes only 3 months for the jawbone to fuse together with the implants while for others it can take up to 6 months. Of course, before we can place the next part of the implant, we will need to make sure that the jawbone and implant have fully integrated.
How long do dental implants last?
Since implants naturally meld together with the bone and tissue in your mouth this means that implants have a very high success rate. This coupled with the durable titanium from which they are made ensure that your implants last several decades. In fact, this simple restoration could last the rest of your life.
